Little Stars by Jaqueline Wilson Review*

 

Hellooo lovelies! 

As many of you know I love to read, it is a commonly occurring theme in my blog posts to see a book review pop up! Today I am reviewing the book Little Stars by Jaqueline Wilson. The other night I had a power cut for a good couple of hours, so with no Wi-Fi as a distraction I lighted up my Christmas candles and started to read!

The book Little Stars fits into the Hetty Feather collection. In the series at the beginning you learn about Hetty Feather who she is and the struggles she has had to go with. You follow her on an adventure through tears and laughter until she ends up at the circus. Hetty then meets Diamond, a beautiful young girl with blonde curly hair. They become not only the best of friends but also like sisters.

Anyway in the book Little Stars Hetty and Diamond have had enough of Tanglefields travelling circus, but both have nowhere to go. So they embark on an adventure, escaping the circus. They travelled by a penny farthing, diamond standing on Hetty’s shoulders. On their journey they stop in a little town to stay overnight. Camped out in the doorway of a shop Hetty and Diamond sleep, but with one eye open in case anybody came near them. Woken up by the early bustle of the market, they begin to panic as a man starts to approach them. Hetty is quickly up, scared that he will take Diamond, however he is like a long lost uncle to them and takes them for breakfast. After a hearty breakfast they set off once again on their journey.

Arriving at the Cavalcade hall (Their final destination) Hetty finds a poster outside… with Bertie’s name on it. If you don’t know who Bertie is he is from a previous book and was Hetty’s sweetheart. Hetty and Diamond quickly become the Little Stars of Mrs Ruby's show, alongside many creative and different acts – including, of course Bertie… Hetty’s Bertie.

However the Cavalcade proves a dangerous place and Hetty must fight to protect Diamond, who longs for a normal childhood which she has never had. Of course Hetty has some trouble in the department of love and can’t decide whether she has feelings for Bertie or Jem. (Jem is from a previous book and was Hetty’s first ever love.)The one thing Hetty is trying to concentrate on is making Diamond and herself, be the best Little Stars.

Will Hetty and Diamond become the next big stars of the Cavalcade... or maybe the stars of somewhere extravagant? To find out I guess you’ll have to read the book! You can purchase the book here!

Jaqueline Wilson is an outstanding author. As a young girl I used to constantly have one of her books glued to my side. One Christmas I remember receiving a writing kit made by Jaqueline filled with tips on how to be an author myself. Let’s just say it got to about ten chapters in and the most exciting thing was the main character had broken her pencil. I guess I’m not destined to write amazing books!

Opal Plumstead by Jaqueline Wilson review*

For some reason now, I've gotten into the habit of reading a lot more, resulting in a lot of finished books that I have loved and want to tell so many people about... this means that I am getting into writing many more book reviews. Due to my un-denying love for reading I'm going to aim to do a review once a month!  
 

The book that I am writing about for august is called Opal Plumstead by Jaqueline Wilson, one of my childhood heroes. When I was growing up I started reading Jaqueline’s simple books such as 'The Worry Website' and 'The mum minder'  which if you are of a younger age I would recommended reading because they are so easy to get you into reading. Then as I got older I started reading books such as 'Sapphire Battersea' and 'Cookie'. I have pretty much every book from Jaqueline Wilson. However one book I had never read was 'Opal Plumstead'.
 

Having always loved Jaqueline Wilson due to her being the person to create my undesiring love for reading, I couldn't believe I haven't read this book. After researching the book I found that it is classes in the 10+ genre. However after reading the book myself I believe that anyone could read this book in the way that it focuses on feminism and the suffragettes, what I would class as a subject for older children to learn about. The book educates you about Mrs Pankhurst and the journey that these suffragettes have to go on to make their points heard. I found the book very inspirational in the way that it makes me want to stand up and say what I believe in more often instead of hiding away.
 

The book however doesn't start of like this. It starts of showing Opal and her family living in poverty you could say. They have a rundown house, hardly able to eat enough food every day. Opals mother doesn't work however her father is a writer. He writes books, yet none have ever been published. Until now... The father comes home saying his book needs a few changes then it will become published. His family knowing that this means a big pay out, start buying things thinking that they can soon pay it all off with the new money. Opal's sister buys new dresses however Opal doesn't care how she looks, she cares more about painting. This is why she goes and buys a new set of paints against her mother’s wishes.

 

 

Opals mother feels as though she has failed in bringing up Opal up because she doesn't care about how she looks. This is because of the image her sister created. Opal's mother favourites her sister because she is the 'perfect image' as I would call it in society. She is a skinny tall girl with beautiful hair.
 

When the police come knocking at the door... the family have their world turned around. Opals father had been stealing money from the company he works for, due to the book not being published, resulting in not wanting to let his family down. This results in two big changes in Opals life. She loses her father as well as her best friend. This is because the girl, Olivia’s family believe this was completely wrong so they are banned from seeing each other.
 

Opal and her family are distraught, now living off no money trying to scrape by. To try and survive this tough time Opals mother pulls opal out of her scholarship at school into a working job. This didn’t start of very well. Opal faced many issues that teens do in society today. She was bullied by fellow workers because she was young and from another town. However when called in to the bosses office (Mrs. Roberts) Opals world is turned around. Not only is she moved into the design room, Opal also gets a leaflet to a suffragette meeting. This is Opal’s ultimate dream, finally applying her skills of art in some way.
 

Opal attended many a meetings then often returning home to Mrs. Roberts for tea. This is where she meets Morgan. Opal and Morgan become very close, until his mother intervenes not liking them together. Due to Opal becoming upset of a silly thing she speaks out at a meeting finally with her own opinion. However this is the wrong thing to do. Not only is she banned from seeing Morgan but also attending meetings. At this stage in the book I felt proud of Opal even though she thought she’d done the wrong thing, I never have the courage to stand up in front of people and say... “You know what I disagree I think this and that”.  Later into the book Opal goes on secret dates with Morgan... until the war breaks out. I’m not going to spoil the ending but I will leave you with this... I cried.
 

I loved this book. I'm quite different from Opal, but through the book I could really relate to her. I loved that sometimes Opal was wrong, or that she often changed her mind on tings because this shows how we aren't all perfect in this world. There was also a family like that chopped and changed. As did some of the relationships with friends/acquaintances'. I like that the book shows everyone isn't living a perfect life and behind closed doors, who knows what is going on in peoples lives.

Finding Audrey By Sophie Kinsella Review!*

So today’s blog post is a review from one of my all-time favourite author Sophie Kinsella. Her new book was released on the 9th June 2015.

 

The bestselling author Sophie Kinsella is known for her Shopaholic series, which personally all where my favourite collection of books. However after reading Finding Audrey I am in love with it. Since receiving it I have read it twice... TWICE! From starting this book I have been drawn in and have not wanted to put this down.

 

The book addresses issues which many teen girls face today in society, however they don't want to speak out about them because either they have no idea they even have such mental illnesses or they are too frightened in the way that they believe society won't accept them. Sophie Kinsella has really addressed the issues well and brought them to life through Audrey. Audrey, we learn gradually, has been through many issues at school. We established that some form of bullying happened that then led to expulsion of several girls and her own breakdown. Due to Audrey breaking down she started to have therapy as well as removing herself from society... Not only from school but also from family, friends and stopping eye contact, she did this by wearing dark black contact lenses. However as Audrey develops further through therapy we see how her life changes. It really makes you realise that sometimes people may say or do things that they may find a joke or hilarious... however to someone like Audrey... even myself we take it to the heart.

Throughout this book I have laughed and cried at the progress in which Audrey has made. I've wanted to pull her out of the book and give her a hug and tell her that will be her best friend and no matter what happens I'm not going to turn on her. The book is filled with mystery, love happiness and hope.

 

Words simply cannot describe my love for this book. It is defiantly my new favourite book by Sophie Kinsella.

Blogmas day 19: BUILD YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

I HELLO EVERYONEEEEE!

 

ITS 6 DAYS UNTIL CHRISMTAS YAYAYAYYAYA

 

So today is another D.I.Y sort of thing but it is very easy!

 

You will need:

 

1958924049- Green books

Some bluetak

A star

Some small, PLASTIC!, lightweight baubles .

 

All you have to do is stack all the books on top of each other with the biggest at the bottom and smallest at the top! You need to have all the spines facing the front as well!

 

Then take the star and bluetak this onto the top, and stick the baubles all over the books because it adds a tree look!

 

This is a very simple post and any one can do it because you wont get messy! I made while I was volunteering at the old peoples home, so sorry if the photo quality isn't that fabulous!

Blogmas day 14: My current, yet weird obsession!?

HELLO EVERYONEE

ITS 11 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS YAYAYAYA

Today I thought that I would talk to you about something I love doing and that is reading! I am obsessed however with the author Sophie Kinsella. I have loved the 'shopaholic series' type books because they are so easy to read, yet gripping and with such a great use of language!

My current favourite book of hers would obviously be the most recent one which is 'Shopaholic to the Stars'! This book is amazing! It is about Becky Bloomwood going to Hollywood with her husband Luke and Daughter Minnie, on a business trip with likes work. Due to Luke working with A-List celebrities Becky takes this chance to try and become friends with them by getting Minnie in the top nursery and trying to peruse a career as a fashion designer/ assistant. However how will this turn out.... Will Becky succeed?

I really would recommend this book to anyone, but obviously over the age of 13 because otherwise the humour may not be understandable or just because they may not enjoy it! But I love it so I think you all will too!

Overall I would defiantly give this book a 5/5 stars!
